Illinois coach Ron Zook suspended linebacker Jonathan Brown for one game Monday for kneeing Northwestern offensive lineman Patrick Ward in the groin Saturday. Brown will sit out the Illini’s game Saturday at Indiana.

The Big Ten signaled its support of the suspension by saying it won’t add more penalties. The ESPN footage of the incident can be found on YouTube.

‘‘He’s a good person, but he got caught up in the
moment, made a serious mistake and must deal with the consequences,’’ Zook said of Brown, who’s tied for second on the
Illini in tackles and is sixth in the Big Ten in tackles for loss.

Brown apologized to his family, teammates, Illinois fans and NU, saying, ‘‘What I did was out of character and won’t happen again.’’

Brown, a sophomore, was named the Big Ten’s defen-
sive player of the week
Sept. 19. He’s expected to be replaced Saturday by Houston Bates, who was named the Big Ten’s freshman of the week Sept. 5.

Illini receiver A.J. Jenkins was named Big Ten co-player of the week with Wisconsin quarterback Russell Wilson. Jenkins’ 268 receiving yards against NU were the third-most in the 115-year history of the Big Ten.

◆ Illinois’ home game
Oct. 15 against Ohio State will kick off at 2:30 p.m. and will be televised by Ch. 7.
