Records: Illinois 3-0, Western Michigan 2-1.
The story line: Fired-up Illini, eyeing their first 4-0 start since 1951, look to avenge 23-17 loss to Broncos in 2008. Illinois defense, ranked 10th in country, must contain Western Michigan quarterback Alex Carder. Illinois offense must rebound from poor second half last week.
The line: Illinois by 14.

The story line: The Fighting Irish try to even their record against a Pittsburgh team still smarting after blowing a 21-point lead.

Records: Cal Poly 1-2, NIU 1-2.
The story line: NIU ends its nonconference schedule determined to rebound from back-to-back losses to Kansas (45-42) and Wisconsin (49-7). The Huskies’ defense was
clobbered in both games, and their offense was smothered against Wisconsin. This is the first game between the schools.
