Notre Dame’s football and men’s basketball teams received much-needed boosts Wednesday as wide receiver DaVaris Daniels and guard Jerian Grant were readmitted to the university.
Both athletes were suspended from the school for the spring for academic reasons.
“The University recently granted readmission to a group of individuals, and that group included student-athletes Jerian Grant and DaVaris Daniels,” the school announced in a statement. “Both will return to Notre Dame beginning with summer school next month.”
Daniels, who is from Vernon Hills, missed a chance to reestablish a rhythm with returning quarterback Everett Golson during spring practice.
Daniels is in line to become the top target for either Golson or fellow quarterback Malik Zaire. He finished second on the team with 49 catches, 745 receiving yards and seven touchdown receptions in 2013. Daniels is the top returning receiver in those three categories.
Grant led the men’s basketball team in scoring at the time of his suspension. He averaged 19 points, 6.2 assists and 2.5 rebounds in 12 games in 2013. Grant was picked on the preseason All-ACC team. But he never got the chance to play a conference game this year. The suspension was announced on Dec. 22, a day after Notre Dame loss to Ohio State at Madison Square Garden. Notre Dame finished 15-17 and went 6-12 in its first season in the ACC.
