Notre Dame holds off late charge by Providence

Colin Falls scored 16 points, Russell Carter and Rob Kurz added 15 each and Notre Dame improved to 16-0 at home this season after beating Providence 81-78 Thursday night in South Bend, Ind.

Carter hit a three-pointer midway through the second half to give the Irish (19-6, 7-5 Big East) a 62-57 lead and spark an 11-2 run. The Irish moved ahead 70-59 when Kurz made a pair of free throws with 3:42 left.

Providence (15-9, 5-6) used a 16-8 run down the stretch to make it close and closed to 78-75 when Weyinmi Efejuku made a three-pointer with 10 seconds left. But Carter made a free throw with seven seconds left, and the Irish put the game away when Zach Hillesland stole the ball at midcourt with five seconds left.

Hillesland added 14 points for the Irish. Herbert Hill led Providence with 18 points and Jonathan Kale had 17.

Notre Dame became the 11th Division I program with 1,600 all-time victories.

PURDUE 81, NO. 24 INDIANA 68: David Teague scored a career-high 32 points as Purdue (17-9, 6-6 Big Ten) beat Indiana (17-7, 7-4) in West Lafayette, Ind., to snap a five-game losing streak in the intrastate rivalry.

D.J. White scored 20 points, Armon Bassett scored 16 and Roderick Wilmont added 15 for Indiana.

Purdue improved to 14-1 at home and boosted its NCAA tournament hopes with its second win over a ranked team.

Teague shot 11-of-18, including 6-for-8 from three-point range. He also grabbed seven rebounds. Carl Landry added 22 points and 11 rebounds for Purdue.

NO. 5 UCLA 67, ARIZONA STATE 61: Arron Afflalo scored 24 points, Darren Collison added 18 and UCLA (22-3, 11-2 Pac-10) rallied from a 10-point deficit to beat Arizona State (6-20, 0-14) in Tempe, Ariz.

Trailing 49-39 with 10:24 to play, the Bruins took command with an 18-2 run, with Collison hitting three three-pointers and Afflalo another to put UCLA ahead 57-51.

UCLA bounced back from a 70-65 loss at West Virginia on Saturday, and the Bruins remained atop the Pac-10, a half-game ahead of No. 10 Washington State.

CALIFORNIA 63, NO. 15 OREGON 61: Ryan Anderson converted a three-point play with 1:01 remaining, and California snapped a six-game losing streak by beating slumping Oregon in Berkeley, Calif.

The Golden Bears (13-12, 5-8 Pac-10) held Oregon (20-6, 8-6) scoreless for the final 4:31 of the game -- including misses by Bryce Taylor and Chamberlain Oguchi in the final seconds.

NO. 22 USC 80, NO. 19 ARIZONA 75: Lodrick Stewart and Nick Young scored 26 points each to lead USC (19-7, 9-4 Pac-10) over Arizona (17-8, 8-6), ending a 21-game losing streak at McKale Center.

The Trojans outscored the Wildcats 8-2 over the final three minutes to win in Tucson for the first time since Jan. 17, 1985.

VALPARAISO 80, W. ILLINOIS 56: Samuel Haanpaa came off the bench to score 18 points and grab six rebounds, leading Valparaiso (14-13, 7-5 Mid-Con) over visiting Western Illinois (6-21, 2-10).

Xavier Price led the Leathernecks with 13 points on 6-of-12 shooting.
