Riding the momentum of its win over Illinois on Sunday, Northwestern continued to play stifling defense against Michigan State on Wednesday. But the offensive struggles of Drew Crawfrod and JerShon Cobb were eventually too much for the Wildcats to overcome in a 54-40 loss to the Spartans.

Crawford, NU’s leading scorer, didn’t score his first basket of the game until 2:45 remaining in the first half. Crawford finished with six points, Cobb scored eight and Tre Demps led Northwestern with 12.

Cobb played full-time at point guard, with Dave Sobolewski missing his second straight game with a concussion.

The Spartans were without forward Adreian Payne, who missed Wednesday’s game due to a sprained right foot.
