Martin named MVP
NEW YORK — Left tackle Zack Martin was named the MVP of the Pinstripe Bowl.
“They had to choose someone, so they chose me I guess,” Martin said.
Martin holds the school record with 52 career starts.
“He’s not only the best offensive lineman that I’ve ever coached … in terms of his play is one thing, but he’s had three first-time starters with him most of the year and now four,” coach Brian Kelly said. “I call it the ‘Larry Bird effect’ where an offensive lineman can make others better around him. He does that.”
Running back George Atkinson III and cornerback Jalen Brown were suspended from the game because of a violation of team rules.
Atkinson actually leaked the news on Twitter.
“For those of you who are wondering I was suspended from today’s game for texting friends and family during team meal, as i did all season,” Atkinson wrote on Twitter. The tweet was later deleted.
Atkinson had 555 rushing yards and three touchdowns in 12 games. Brown played in two games (Michigan State and Air Force) and did not record a tackle.
Kelly said he’s made a decision for the next defensive coordinator, but he couldn’t announce it Saturday. The coach will come from outside the program.
An internet report late Saturday said that the job would go to New York Jets linebackers coach Brian VanGorder, who worked with Kelly at Grand Valley State.
Kelly is still weighing options for offensive coordinator.
