UIC, Notre Dame prevail; Loyola loses

Gary Talton and Hayden Humes each scored 14 points, and Illinois-Chicago used a 15-0 run early in the second half to pull away to a 62-36 victory Saturday against Mercer in a consolation game of the Paradise Jam tournament in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.

The Flames (2-1) took a 30-19 lead into halftime and started their 15-0 run with a tip-in by Marc Brown with 16:26 left. Daniel Barnes scored seven of his nine points during that run, and he also finished with a game-high seven rebounds for UIC.

Travis Smith and Darious Moten scored eight points apiece for the Bears (2-2).

South Florida 68, Loyola 50

Kore White led a balanced attack with 15 points, and the Bulls (2-1) opened a 17-point halftime lead and coasted past the Ramblers (2-2) at the University of South Florida Invitational in Tampa.

Anthony Collins added 11 points and Victor Rudd 10 for South Florida, which led 38-21 at the break and never allowed Loyola to mount a serious threat in the second half.

Devon Turk and Ben Averkamp each scored nine points to lead the Ramblers, who haven’t beaten a Big East team since a 70-58 victory against Notre Dame on Jan. 24, 1994.

Notre Dame 78, BYU 68

Jack Cooley scored 19 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to carry the No. 20 Irish (3-1) past the Cougars (2-2) in the third-place game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Jerian Grant also scored 19 points — 17 in the second half — and Eric Atkins 16, including a three-pointer that gave Notre Dame a cushion after BYU had pulled to 63-61 with 4:28 left.

Tyler Haws led the Cougars with 21 points and eight rebounds.

Ohio State 69, Rhode Island 58

Deshaun Thomas scored 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to help the No. 4 Buckeyes (2-0) overcome the pesky Rams (0-3) in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off tournament in Uncasville, Conn.

Lenzelle Smith Jr. added 15 points and Aaron Craft 13 for Ohio State, which struggled to pull away well into the second half. Xavier Munford scored 16 points to lead Rhode Island, which trailed by only four at halftime.

Iowa 65, Gardner-Webb 56

The Hawkeyes (4-0) used a 47-18 scoring advantage in the second half to wipe out a 20-point halftime deficit on their way to defeating the Runnin’ Bulldogs (2-3) in Iowa City. Aaron White led a balanced attack with 13 points and 10 rebounds for Iowa, which trailed 38-18 at the break.
