Junior quarterback Nate Scheelhaase sat out of Illinois’ practice Tuesday to rest his sprained left ankle, but coach Tim Beckman said he hopes the third-year starter will be able to practice a bit on Wednesday.
“Nathan was on the field working on rehab and getting the ankle prepared,’’ Beckman said. “He was much better today. We hope to get him on the field [Wednesday].’’
Backups Reilly O’Toole, a sophomore who appeared in 10 games last year, and Miles Osei, a junior who impressed in training camp, are capable if Scheelhaase can’t go, Beckman said.
“We’ll prepare for him not to play,”’ co-offensive coordinator Chris Beatty said. “It’s a long season. We want to make sure he’s close to 100 percent. If not, we feel good about the other guys.’’
