Loyola senior Walt Gibler has been named the winner of the 2011-12 Cecil N. Coleman Medal of Honor, the highest individual honor in the Horizon League. He is only the second Loyola basketball player to receive the honor. Julie Wojta, a basketball player at Wisconsin-Green Bay, was named the female recipient.
Gibler is a pre-med major who graduated in May with a degree in psychology. The Cincinnati native averaged 12.4 points and 5.8 rebounds during his senior year while maintaining a near 4.0 grade point average. He was a two-time National Jesuit Men’s Basketball All-American team selection and named to the league’s All-Academic team.
Gibler is the fifth Loyola athlete to receive the award and first basketball player since 2004 when Jason Telford was named.
