Memphis set to join Big East

Memphis could be joining the Big East in the latest shift in conference allignments.

The move could be announced this week, according to CBSSports.com, though officials from the school and conference are declining comment.

Memphis currently is a member of Conference USA, where current Big East members DePaul, Marquette, Cincinnati, South Florida and Louisville were alligned before joining the Big East in 2006. The move for the 2013 season apparently is football-driven, though Memphis will bring all its sports to the Big East, according to the report.

The Big East is bracing to lose longtime members Syracuseand Pittsburgh in another year, and West Virginia, which is trying to join the Big 12 next season in violation of the conference’s 27-month notification requirement. Both sides have filed lawsuits over the move. Syracuse and Pittsburgh are planning a move to the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Houston, Southern Methodist and Central Florida already have announced plans to leave Conference USA and join the Big East in 2013-14. Boise State and San Diego State are to join the Big East as football-only members in 2013 and Navy in 2015.

If Pittsburgh and Syracuse leave in 2013, the Big East would have 11 football members and 17 basketball members.
