Celtics’ Stevens praises Ron Adams

Updated: February 4, 2014 10:35AM

The Bulls’ front office would like to ignore talk concerning former assistant Ron Adams, but it was front and center Thursday.

An assistant to Celtics rookie coach Brad Stevens, Adams returned to the United Center for the first time since general manager Gar Forman decided not to renew his contract this summer.

The Bulls’ loss was the Celtics’ gain, especially for Stevens, who was coming over after a successful stint at Butler.

“When I hired [Adams], he characterized himself as my ‘editor,’ and I thought that was a really good phrase,’’ Stevens said. “What would work, what wouldn’t work. ‘Yeah, why not try this? This might work,’ and it’s been great to have him around.

“He’s one of those guys in coaching where he’s been doing it a long time. He’s got so many experiences, and he’s only doing it to help us all grow and get better, both staff and players.’’

Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau met Stevens through Adams a few years ago.

“I think Brad has really studied the pro game for a long time,’’ Thibodeau said. “I know he came by a few times to visit with Ron when Ron was here, and obviously his record speaks for itself at the college level.’’

College try

Thibodeau coached at Salem State and Harvard from 1981 to ’89, but returning to college isn’t in his plans.

“A big part of college is the recruiting,’’ Thibodeau said. “I’ve been out of that so long now that I think it would be difficult to go back because of not having that contact. I love the NBA game because it’s all basketball.’’
