Wallace best bet to join Stars

Comments

January 26, 2007
If the coaches closely follow fan balloting when they cast votes for reserves, the only Bulls player likely to join the Eastern Conference All-Star team would be Ben Wallace.

Fans voted for the starters, and Wallace (788,950 votes) finished third among conference centers. Miami's Shaquille O'Neal (1,622,446) was first followed by Orlando's Dwight Howard (1,464,613).

But guessing how coaches will vote isn't exactly a science.

''When I vote, I do the best I can to vote for people on winning teams,'' said Bulls coach Scott Skiles, who according to the rules cannot cast a ballot for any of his players.

''I hope that I look at enough games all around the league that I just don't base it on some guy who gets off against us, but how he plays against everyone.

''Then you have to take a statistical look, too, and see where a guy is in certain categories. I also know for a fact -- because I've talked to some and worked with some -- that some coaches just sit down and get it over with in about three minutes and write names on there. Not that they're small about it or anything, they just automatically think they know who they are and just do it.''

Skiles declined to campaign by name for any of the Bulls.

''We have a winning record,'' he said. ''We have more than one player having a very good year. I would say a couple of our guys ought to get a look.''

Bulls leading scorer Ben Gordon (21.1 ppg) was eighth among guards in the fan voting (316,428). No Bulls forwards cracked the top 10.

In selecting the reserves, coaches must vote for seven players -- two guards, two forwards, a center and two players regardless of position. After the coaches select the reserves, if a player is unable to participate in the All-Star Game, NBA commissioner David Stern will select a replacement.

MAKING PROGRESS: Martynas Andriuskevicius, who is recovering from severe head injuries after being punched by Awvee Storey in an altercation Dec. 28 while both were with the NBDL's Dakota Wizards, will undergo more tests today.

Andriuskevicius said he is feeling good. He has been riding a stationary bike and lifting weights, just not above his head. He hopes to be cleared by doctors to travel with the Bulls when they leave Tuesday for a two-week road trip.

''I just want to be with my team,'' said Andriuskevicius, who is regaining the 15 pounds lost while recuperating.

Asked if he still is considering a civil suit against Storey, Andriuskevicius said, ''I don't know. My agent [Herb Rudoy] wants me to, but ... I just want to focus on getting healthy.''

NOTE: Michael Sweetney (bruised right shin) missed his third consecutive game.
