Rose says driving over 100 mph was 'big mistake'
A contrite Derrick Rose said Tuesday night that his charge for allegedly driving more than 100 mph on Interstate 88 was ''a big mistake'' that he vowed never to repeat.
Rose, 19, must appear in Kane County Court this month after he was ticketed for driving about 105 mph in a 65 mph zone while heading east on I-88 about two months ago, acknowledged Rose and Terry Ekl, a lawyer representing Rose.
''I know I did something dumb,'' said Rose, the former Simeon star whom the Bulls made the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft last week. ''I made a big mistake. I'm very sorry, and I can only promise that it will never happen again.''
Rose said he was not going or returning from anywhere in particular when he was stopped but was just taking a long drive to clear his head.
A Bulls spokesman said the team was aware of the incident but would have no comment until the legal proceedings run their course.
Former Bulls guard B.J. Armstrong, who now works for Wasserman Media Group, the agency that represents Rose, was contacted Tuesday night and informed of the incident but had no comment.
Rose is scheduled to appear in Kane County Court on July 11.
Ekl said he isn't sure what will happen when Rose appears in court because he's still waiting to hear from prosecutors about the case. But he said Rose has ''a perfect driving record.''
''He doesn't have a single moving violation or a ticket,'' Ekl said. ''I wish my kids had as good of driving records as Derrick.''
