Former White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle ’s love of dogs almost prevented him from signing with the Miami Marlins, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

The paper said the Miami-Dade County ban on pit bulls had Buehrle, who owns an adopted pit bull along with three Vizlas, think twice about signing “if it came down to not finding a house [where all his canines could live].’’

Buehrle, his wife, two children and pets found a home in neighboring Broward County. Buehrle and his wife,

Jamie , were active in pet adoption with the Sox and became spokespeople for Best Friends Animal Society in Utah, which took in and rehabilitated 22 of the pit bulls confiscated in the Michael Vick dogfighting case.

“It’s kind of ridiculous that because of the way a dog looks, people will ban it,’’ Buehrle told the paper. “Every kind of dog has good and bad, and that depends on the handlers. If you leave a dog outside all the time, it’ll be crazy. Slater [his dog] would never do anything
harmful.’’
