Dale Torborg – a.k.a. The Demon – has hit me with a metal chair and clothes-lined me in the wrestling ring, so now it’s time for some revenge by bringing the former pro wrestler and current Sox strength and conditioning coordinator into the Interrogation Room.
Joe Cowley: You had a name in the professional wrestling world before working for the Expos as their strength coach, but didn’t your name spread in the MLB world with the Antonio Alfonseca incident?
Dale Torborg: It became a national story after the fact. He got lippy and ended up locking himself in the trainer’s room when I went after him. People thought that’s why [the Marlins] traded him, but it happened a month before he was even traded. People still bring that up to me all the time.
JC: Were you afraid of his sixth finger?
JC: Would you have killed him?
DT: I wasn’t a happy camper.
JC: Your dad [former manager Jeff Torborg] is old school. What did that conversation go like when you told him you wanted to be a pro wrestler?
DT: It didn’t go over too well in the beginning. He said, ‘You want to do what?’ [Former catcher] Carlton Fisk was in the room with me, and he said, ‘It’s a great idea . . . I’ll come to the ring with you as the Iron Fisk.’
JC: You hand out championship belts to the minor-league guys, what’s that about?
DT: We order them from WrestlingSuperStore.com, and it’s incentive to the guys to work as hard as they can in the program.
JC: I have a title belt now. Does that intimidate you?
DT: No, it actually makes me want to hurt you even more.
JC: That’s not the answer I was looking for.
DT: Too bad.
