KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Chris Sale will make his first start in five weeks when he faces the New York Yankees Thursday night at U.S. Cellular Field.

The Sox All-Star lefty threw a light sideline of fewer than 30 pitches in Kansas City Tuesday, his final step of a rehab process that took a couple of weeks longer than he and the Sox expected when he went on the disabled list for the first time in his career.

Sale, on the DL with a flexor muscle strain, hasn’t pitched for the Sox since he threw a career-high 127 pitches against the Boston Red Sox on April 17. He threw four dominating innings (68 pitches) in a AAA rehab start Friday.

“It’s always light with Chris, it’s never hard,’’ pitching coach Don Cooper said of Sale’s workout. “If he’s going to pitch 210, 220 innings we’re not going to pile up a lot of hard work and innings in the bullpens.”

Sale said Monday that the elbow feels good and that he was eager to pitch again.

The Sox close out a nine-game road trip against the Royals tonight.
