KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The White Sox placed right-hander Nate Jones on the 15-day disabled list with a strain in his left hip muscle Friday and called up right-hander Jake Petricka from AAA Charlotte.
Jones, a key piece in the Sox bullpen, struggled in his two appearances Wednesday and Thursday. He was charged with four runs without getting an out. He was thought to be healthy after getting a late start in spring training because of a left glute strain.
Petricka, 25, pitched in 16 games for the Sox last season, posting a 1-1 record with a 3.26 ERA over 19 1/3 innings. He made his major league debut in Kansas City on Aug. 22.
Petricka was 5-0 with a 1.81 ERA in 31 games between Charlotte and AA Birmingham.
The Sox play Kansas City Friday in the Royals home opener at 3:10 p.m. Erik Johnson is the starting pitcher, opposing the Royals Jeremy Guthrie. Third baseman Conor Gillaspie returned to the starting lineup after missing two games with the flu.
The Sox won two of three games from the Twins in their season-opening set at U.S. Cellular Field.
