GLENDALE, Ariz. — White Sox lefthander Jose Quintana faced nine Oakland A’s without retiring a batter on Tuesday, leaving the White Sox’ Cactus League game in the first inning after one trip through the A’s lineup.

Considered to be the team’s second-best starting pitcher behind Chris Sale, Quintana uncharacteristically struggled with his location, walking two and allowing seven hits including a three-run homer to No. 3 batter Jed Lowrie, an RBI double to Michael Taylor and a two-run triple to ninth-place hitter Sam Fuld before manager Robin Ventura removed him from the game. The A’s added two runs in the inning against reliever Deunte Heath and led 9-0 before the Sox came to bat.

Quintana had given up 11 runs over six innings in his previous three starts. He was removed from his second start against Arizona after behind hit on the shin by a line drive in the first inning, but has since said the shin is fine.

He gave up seven runs on six hits and three walks over three innings in his last start against the Angels in Tempe.
