Sox recap: Dodgers 5, Sox 0

Updated: April 2, 2014 6:16AM

He’s ready

Ace Chris Sale pitched 22⁄3 scoreless innings of one-hit ball with four strikeouts and no walks. He threw 42 pitches with only one slider.

They’re not

Sox hitters mustered only five hits, one of them a double toward the left-field corner by third baseman Matt Davidson. Adam Eaton led off the game by taking three pitches before singling to center. Tyler Flowers, Dayan Viciedo and Jordan Danks each singled.

Good for the new guys

Davidson showed some pop, and Jose Abreu showed some patience by twice working counts deep. Abreu also lined out deep to left in his first at-bat. Eaton looked the part of a leadoff man. ‘‘That’s kind of what you expect out of him,’’ manager Robin Ventura said of Eaton. “He grinds out at-bats, gets on base and tries to wreak havoc.’’

Mound rundown

Donnie Veal, Mitchell Boggs and Charlie Leesman (two strikeouts) each pitched a scoreless inning. Jake Petricka gave up two runs and two hits, including a homer by Joc Pederson. Prospect Omar Poveda gave up three runs, including a homer by Clint Robinson. Matt Lindstrom was supposed to pitch but was scratched with a mild left oblique strain.

On deck

Indians at Sox, Glendale, 2:05 p.m., mlb.com (audio), Trevor Bauer vs. John Danks. If the game is rained out (it’s in the forecast), Danks will throw in the cages.
