Adam Dunn gets Oscars pass

Updated: April 1, 2014 10:25AM

GLENDALE, Ariz. — There was genuine concern on Adam Dunn’s part about skipping town to attend the Oscars. It took general manager Rick Hahn and manager Robin Ventura looking him in the eye and telling him to go.

“I can’t tell if you are rolling your eyes in an email or a text,’’ Dunn said. “So I appreciate Rick and Robin doing it face-to-face because if I saw anything remotely that they really, truly weren’t 100 percent on board, I wouldn’t do it.’’

So it’s all systems go to Hollywood Boulevard for the Academy Awards on Sunday for Dunn, who played a small, non-speaking role as a bartender in “Dallas Buyers Club.”

Dunn is also an investor in the film, which has six nominations, including best picture.

“I’m not here to go to the Oscars,’’ Dunn said. “I’m here to get ready for Opening Day, and if I was playing tomorrow and playing Sunday and all that stuff and the schedule didn’t line up, then I wouldn’t have gone.’’

Dunn is as well-liked as any player in the Sox’ clubhouse.

“He’s a great teammate,’’ said Ventura, who’ll see Dunn around Sunday morning for workouts and give him Monday off.

“He came in and talked it over, and he wanted to make sure everybody was all right with it, but I think he should go. It’s probably once in a lifetime. I don’t know how many more movies he’s going to be in.

“Everybody’s probably going to watch it to see if they can spot him. Hopefully he wins. He has to go up if he wins; that’s part of the rules of going.’’
