White Sox meet with pitcher Masahiro Tanaka

Updated: January 9, 2014 7:10PM

The White Sox met with Japanese free agent pitcher Masahiro Tanaka and his representatives on Thursday in the Los Angeles area for what general manager Rick Hahn described as “exploratory” discussions.

Hahn, executive vice president Ken Williams and manager Robin Ventura took part in the meeting.

“The meeting was exploratory in nature,” Hahn said in a statement. “It was an opportunity for us to sit down with Masahiro and discuss how he potentially fits our vision for the Chicago White Sox for the next several seasons.”

The Sox said they will have no further comment on the status of any additional conversations until Tanaka, a coveted 25-year-old star who is expected to sign for a multiyear contract in the range of $100 million or more, makes his final decision public.

Tanaka, who compiled a 24-0 record and 1.27 ERA in Japan last season, reportedly had meetings set with the Dodgers, Angels, Yankees, Diamondbacks, Cubs and Sox. The Blue Jays and Mariners, among others, are likely in play, too. The deadline to sign him is Jan. 24.
