DETROIT -- Conor Gillaspie and Gordon Beckham each hit home runs, and Dayan Viciedo showed more signs of coming out of a slump with two hits including an RBI double, but the middle of the Tigers’ lineup countered with too much firepower in Detroit’s 8-5 win over the White Sox on Wednesday night.

Coming off a start against the Tampa Bay Rays in which he failed to finish the second inning, Sox starter Dylan Axelrod (3-6) allowed seven runs on 11 hits over 5 2/3 innings. Axelrod’s ERA climbed to 5.33.

Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder and Vic Martinez each had three hits for the Tigers (50-40). Fielder hit his 16th homer in the first inning.

The Sox, who banged out a season-high 23 hits in an 11-4 win on Tuesday night, had nine on Wednesday, including seven off starter Rick Porcello (6-6). Alex Rios, who had six hits Tuesday, was 0-for-4 with two strikeouts.

Viciedo, who hit two home runs Tuesday, raised his average to .248.

The Sox fell to 35-53.
