Ninth-place hitter Adam Rosales homered with two outs and nobody on in the 10th against Matt Thornton, and the Oakland A’s held on for a 5-4 victory against the White Sox on Thursday night at U.S. Cellular Field.

Rosales’ blast was the A’s fourth bases-empty homer of the night. Yoenis Cespedes hit two and Josh Reddick launched a game-tying shot in the seventh against Sox starter Jose Quintana.

The Sox (25-33), who snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 7-5 win in 16 innings in Seattle on Wednesday, gave Quintana a three-run lead in the fourth inning. Alexei Ramirez drove in two runs with a double, and Alex Rios scored Ramirez with a single to give the Sox a 3-0 lead against A’s starter Dan Straily.

Alejandro De Aza had an RBI single in the fifth for the Sox.

The Sox had a good chance to win in the ninth after Alex Rios doubled with one out. But Adam Dunn struck out, and Paul Konerko grounded out to send the Sox to extra innings for the second straight day.

In the Sox’ tenth, De Aza singled and was bunted to second by Ramirez, but Rios grounded out to shortstop and Dunn, on an 0-2 pitch, flied out to the left-field warning track against A’s closer Grant Balfour.

Bench coach Mark Parent was acting Sox manager in place of Robin Ventura, who is in California to attend his daughter’s graduation.
