The long ball was Jake Peavy’s ally Friday, helping carry the White Sox starter to a 5-4 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays at U.S. Cellular Field.
Hector Gimenez, Tyler Greene and Conor Gillaspie each connected off Rays starter Roberto Hernandez (1-4) to pull the Sox back from an early 3-0 defiict.
The victory was the third straight for the Sox and third for Peavy (3-1), who worked 6 2/3 innings, giving up six hits--two of them homers by Matt Joyce and Evan Longoria--with one walk and six strikeouts.
Matt Thornton and Jesse Crain held the Rays scoreless in the seventh and eighth. Closer Addison Reed gave up a run in the ninth when Jose Molina doubled and scored on a Joyce single but still earned his eighth save.
