Gold Glove fills Buehrle's wish list
White Sox left-hander Mark Buehrle was fresh off his perfect game in July when he was asked what was left to accomplish for a pitcher who already had a World Series ring, an All-Star Game victory and a no-hitter. Without hesitation, Buehrle said a Gold Glove would complete his career wish list.
He got his first Gold Glove when the American League team was unveiled Tuesday.
''It's weird to say, but it does rank just as high up as the perfect game,'' Buehrle said during a conference call. ''In this case, you are doing 95 percent of the work. During a perfect game, you are making the pitches, but you also have to depend on everyone making the plays behind you.
''I definitely take pride in fielding my position. I've always wanted to win a Gold Glove. It's a great honor.''
Buehrle led AL pitchers with eight pickoffs, 55 total chances and 41 assists and tied for the league lead by assisting on five double plays. He committed only one error. Buehrle is the first Sox player to win a Gold Glove since third baseman Robin Ventura -- a five-time winner -- earned his last one in 1998.
Buehrle learned he had won the award a few days ago and immediately sent a text message to general manager Ken Williams.
''I texted back one of those little frowns and said, 'That must mean I have to pay you some sort of bonus,''' Williams said. ''He probably should have five or six of them now. He is amazing with the glove.''
