The White Sox’ Robin Ventura finished third in voting for American League Manager of the Year, the Baseball Writers’ Association of America announced Tuesday.

Bob Melvin won the award after leading the Oakland Athletics to a 94-68 record and the AL West title with the league’s lowest payroll at $55 million. Davey Johnson won it in the National League after leading the Washington Nationals to the best record in the majors and their first playoff appearance.

Ventura managed the Sox to an
85-77 record and a second-place finish in the AL Central after leading the division for 117 days in his first season.

The former Sox star third baseman was a surprise choice to replace Ozzie Guillen last November because he had no managing or coaching experience. But players responded to his calm demeanor, and stars such as Adam Dunn, Alex Rios and Jake Peavy all bounced back from subpar seasons in 2011.

Buck Showalter was a close second in the AL after leading the Baltimore Orioles to 93 victories and a playoff appearance a year after they lost 93 games. Melvin received 16 first-place votes and Showalter 12. In the NL, the Cincinnati Reds’ Dusty Baker finished a distant second. Johnson had 23 first-place votes and Baker five.
