For the record
The White Sox improved to 12-15 behind a very strong start from Chris Sale and near-perfect relief pitching from four closer candidates Thursday. Outfield prospect Trayce Thompson , a late fill-in from minor-league camp for Alex Rios , broke a 1-1 tie with a home run. Adam Dunn singled for his team-high 13th RBI.
Rios’ Achilles
Aside from reliever Jesse Crain’s oblique strain and Dunn’s stiff neck, Sox camp has had few health concerns until Rios was scratched from the lineup with a slightly strained left Achilles tendon. Manager Robin Ventura said Rios probably will play Friday.
Getting dirty
Dayan Viciedo , who has struggled at the plate (.167, one RBI) and in the field, didn’t make a good read on Juan Rivera’s rope double over his head. Viciedo momentarily took a seat on the warning track retrieving the ball before throwing it back in. He later singled and scored the Sox’ first run.
On deck
Sox at Royals (14-13), 8:05 p.m. Lefty Eric Stults (2.89 ERA) gets the start. Brian Bruney (0.73), in competition for a bullpen job, also will pitch. Fifth starter Philip Humber (2.25) pitches in a minor-league game in the morning.
