For the record
In a charity event supporting the Christina Taylor-Green Memorial Foundation in Tucson, Dylan Axelrod and three minor-leaguers were roughed up for 23 hits in a split-squad loss. Axelrod, in competition for a bullpen spot, gave up four runs and 10 hits in four innings, including a home run to Matt Kemp.
Worth noting
It’s good news for the Sox when an Adam Dunn strikeout is worth noting. Dunn struck out for the second time all spring, and he took issue with it. Dunn thought the called third strike was low. He (.308) walked and scored, going 0-for-2. Dunn is tied for third in the Cactus League in home runs (four) and walks (nine).
Late-night fun
No. 3 starter Gavin Floyd beat the Diamondbacks in Glendale late Friday. He allowed two runs and five hits in six innings, though he also walked five. Nate Jones struck out five in two innings to earn the save. A.J. Pierzynski went 3-for-3 with three runs and three RBI. He hit an inside-the-park homer in the fifth, his third homer of the spring. The ball caromed off the top of the center-field wall toward right field, and Pierzynski slid into home to beat the throw. Dan Johnson also had three hits.
On deck
Sox at Brewers, 3:05 p.m., 670-AM. Left-hander Chris Sale faces lefty Randy Wolf. Will Ohman and Brian Bruney also will pitch.
