WHITE SOX 6, RANGERS 3
A day of firsts
After three defeats, Robin Ventura enjoyed his first victory as a manager, and it was brought to him by a B-team list of pitchers against the Rangers’ A-list of hitters. Adam Dunn and Gordon Beckham each hit their first home run.
B there
Addison Reed, Will Ohman and prospect Jake Petricka each pitched a scoreless inning in a B game in Surprise, Ariz. The Sox lost 7-4 but didn’t bat in the seventh or eighth because the Rangers were out of pitchers. Sox starter Gavin Floyd (three innings, five hits, two runs) pitched a 1-2-3 inning without retiring a batter when the Rangers got three hits but ran themselves into three outs on the bases. Floyd threw 47 pitches, 29 for strikes. He threw 15 more on the side. “I feel good about where my stuff and location are,’’ Floyd said. “I feel like I’m coming along pretty good.’’
Hot and not
Third baseman Brent Morel is 5-for-8 with three runs scored. Leadoff man Alejandro De Aza is hitless in seven at-bats.
On deck
Cubs (2-3) at Sox (1-3), 2:05 p.m., Ch. 9, 670-AM. Chris Sale, Matt Thornton, Donnie Veal, Nate Jones, Nestor Molina, Brian Bruney and Jose Quintana are scheduled to pitch.
