The White Sox signed first baseman Dan Johnson, who batted .119 in 91 at-bats for the Tampa Bay Rays last season, to a minor-league contract Tuesday.
Johnson, a 32-year-old left-handed hitter, was slowed by a wrist injury in 2011. He hit two home runs: the tying blast in the Rays’ victory against the New York Yankees on the final night of the regular season that clinched the American League wild card, and a three-run homer in the ninth inning against Matt Thornton in a 9-7 win against the Sox in April.
Johnson is a career .235 hitter with seven home runs that either tied the score or gave the Rays a lead. He batted .275 with 15 homers and 58 RBI as an Oakland Athletics rookie in 2005. In 2007, he batted .236 with 18 homers and 62 RBI with the A’s.
