White Sox promote Buddy Bell, two others

The White Sox promoted farm director Buddy Bell to vice president of player development and special assignments on Monday. Minor-league field coordinator Nick Capra will assume Bell’s responsibilities as director of player development, and Kirk Champion was promoted to minor-league field coordinator.

This will be the fifth season in the organization for Bell, who has had an increasingly greater voice in decisions. Robin Ventura, who served under Bell last season, was named to replace Ozzie Guillen as manager in October, and Bell had considerable input in helping Ventura assemble his coaching staff.

Invites to camp

Six players with major-league experience, including right-hander Brian Bruney and infielder Dallas McPherson, were among the 16 players added to the White Sox’ spring-training roster.

Bruney pitched in 23 games for the Sox last season. McPherson also had a brief stay with the Sox. Left-hander Eric Stults (Dodgers, Rockies), catcher Hector Gimenez (Astros, Dodgers), infielder Ray Olmedo (Reds, Blue Jays) and outfielder Delwyn Young (Dodgers, Pirates) have played in the big leagues.

Blue Jays ink Vizquel

Infielder Omar Vizquel, who spent the last two seasons with the Sox, agreed to a one-year contract with the Blue Jays.

The veteran infielder, who turns 45 on April 24, would be headed into his 24th major-league season if he makes the team out of camp.

He hit .251 in 58 games with the Sox in 2011. He has played in 2,908 games.
