Cubs and D-backs change Sunday pitching

May 11, 2008

The marquee pitching matchup planned Sunday between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Cubs was washed away this morning with the rain.

Both teams chose to scratch their starters -- Randy Johnson for Arizona and Carlos Zambrano for the Cubs -- after rain delayed the start of the game.

Instead, the Diamondbacks will start righthander Edgar Gonzalez (1-2, 7.20 ERA) against Sean Gallagher, who will make his first start for the Cubs after being recalled May 3 from Class AAA Iowa.

Cubs manager Lou Piniella originally planned to sit lefthanded hitting Kosuke Fukudome against lefty Johnson but changed his mind after Johnson was scratched. But he did take Alfonso Soriano out of the lineup as a precaution for his legs because of the soggy conditions. Reed Johnson was to start in left field and lead off, with Felix Pie playing center field and batting eighth.
