Cubs recap

May 11, 2008

At the plate
Kosuke Fukudome homered for the first time since Opening Day, hitting a two-run drive against Brandon Medders that capped the Cubs' six-run seventh. But Alfonso Soriano had a bigger day, going 4-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Aramis Ramirez added a 2-for-4 day with an RBI and a run scored.

On the mound
Ryan Dempster dueled Diamondbacks rookie Max Scherzer through six innings, giving up two runs and three hits to Scherzer's one run and five hits. But the Cubs' bullpen was better than that of the Diamondbacks. Scott Eyre pitched his first inning of the season and earned the victory.

Pivotal point
Mark DeRosa started the big seventh inning against reliever Chad Qualls with a single. The inning turned on pinch hitter Daryle Ward's RBI single that scored DeRosa to tie the game. The hit ended an 0-for-15 stretch for Ward as a pinch hitter. The Cubs followed with four more hits, including Fukudome's homer.

On deck
The Diamondbacks' Randy Johnson (2-1, 5.06 ERA) vs. the Cubs' Carlos Zambrano (5-1, 1.80), 1:20 p.m., Ch. 9, 720-AM.
