Patterson brother is sent home

September 5, 2007

The Patterson family name took another hit in Chicago sports lore Tuesday when Eric, the brother of Corey, was replaced on the Cubs' roster after showing up late to the ballpark Monday.

Eric Patterson, an All-Pacific Coast League second baseman who had earned a September promotion when rosters expanded, was optioned to Class AA Tennessee after Monday's game following what was at least his second tardiness infraction. Farm director Oneri Fleita had discussed the issue with him earlier this season, general manager Jim Hendry said.

''It's just something I decided to do for the best interests of the organization,'' said Hendry, who stressed no off-the-field troubles were involved.

''Obviously, he made a mistake. He's a good young player. He's a good kid. He's got ability, and he'll have a heck of a chance to make the ballclub next year.

''But I didn't think it was something to look upon lightly. It's a privilege to be called up from the minor-league system in September in the middle of a pennant race.''

Eric Patterson, an eighth-round draft pick in 2004, entered the organization under the substantial shadow of his older brother, the former can't-miss-but-did first-rounder now playing for Baltimore.

The Cubs called up a surprised Sam Fuld from Class AA Tennessee to replace Eric Patterson. Fuld, a 25-year-old outfielder, hit .287 with a .376 on-base percentage this year.

''I definitely didn't see it coming,'' Fuld said.

Other fresh faces
The Cubs also added left-hander Carmen Pignatiello and right-hander Kevin Hart from the minors, likely completing their September promotions.

''We've got enough players now,'' manager Lou Piniella said.

Hart made his major-league debut Wednesday, pitching two innings, allowing an inherited run and impressing Piniella. He was acquired from Baltimore in December for Freddie Bynum and went a combined 12-6 with a 3.99 ERA in Classes AA and AAA, including a 10-1 record and 2.80 ERA over his last 17 starts.

Pignatiello debuted in August, allowing one run in 1 1/3 innings over three appearances.
