Jeff Samardzija hasn’t won a game this season, despite a 1.53 ERA. He was in line for the victory Wednesday, which would have ended a stretch of 10 winless starts dating to his last victory on Aug. 24. But the Cubs’ bullpen blew a three-run lead in the ninth inning and lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-5.
Samardzija has three no-decisions and two losses, one in which the Cubs were shut out and another in which he had one run of support as the defense gave up two unearned runs.
“As a starting pitcher, you come out regardless of the last time out,” he said. “You have a short memory. If you start carrying it over start to start, that’s when it starts to snowball.”
Homer, then helped home
Justin Ruggiano hit a two-run homer in the sixth, his first of the season, but he had to be helped off the field in the ninth when he injured his left hamstring attempting a sliding catch near the right-field foul line.
Edwards to see doctor
Right-hander C.J. Edwards, the Cubs’ top pitching prospect, left Class AA Tennessee for Chicago to be examined Thursday by team doctors after experiencing discomfort in his shoulder.
