White Sox give Robin Ventura contract extension

Updated: January 24, 2014 11:12PM

The White Sox announced that manager Robin Ventura will sign a multiyear contract extension.

Ventura is going into the third year of his contract he signed before the 2012 season. The Sox offered him an extension during spring last year but he declined.

“There was never really any question in our minds as to who we wanted in the White Sox dugout now and into the future,” Sox general manager Rick Hahn said.

The Sox did not release terms of the deal for the 46-year-old Ventura, whose managerial record is 148-176 over two seasons.

Ventura was a finalist for American League Manager of the Year in 2012 after the Sox went 85-77 and finished in second place in the AL Central after a late-season fade. The Sox were 63-99 and in last place last year, one of their worst seasons in franchise history.

“[Chairman] Jerry [Reinsdorf], [vice president] Kenny [Williams], Robin and I have had many conversations about our objectives in both the short and long term,” Hahn said “We are in complete agreement with the direction and vision for this organization in 2014 and beyond. I have great confidence that Robin’s leadership and direction will help us reach our goals, and there was never really any question in our minds as to who we wanted in the White Sox dugout now and into the future.”

Said Ventura: “We have been on the same page since day one, but I’m very happy to have this behind us so we can continue to keep our focus on the playing field. I’m excited about the direction of the club and the moves we have made this offseason, but there is still a lot of work to be done so I think we’re all ready to get to spring training and get started.”

Ventura played for the Sox form 1989-98 during his 16-year major league career.
