The White Sox have surfaced alongside the Cubs as potential suitors for Japanese right-hander Masahiro Tanaka, whose 24-0 record and 1.27 ERA has numerous teams, including the free-spending Dodgers, Rangers and Mariners as well as the Diamondbacks, possibly pushing a contract above $100 million.

The Sox aren’t considered top contenders for Tanaka, but general manager Rick Hahn is expected to do his due diligence and explore the possibility.

Tanaka’s tour of major-league teams will include visits this week with the Cubs and Sox, according to a Comcast SportsNet report. Whether either team comes close to landing the 25-year-old remains to be seen, although the Sox didn’t hesitate to part with $68 million for Cuban free agent Jose Abreu, who, as in Tanaka’s case, was a young free agent who didn’t cost a first-round draft pick.
