Closer Kevin Gregg ended his second tenure with the Cubs in September in a falling-out with management over plans to test Pedro Strop in the role.

But Strop might not be the closer after all.

Jose Veras, who closed games last season for the Houston Astros and Detroit Tigers, has signed a one-year deal with the Cubs, according to ESPNdeportes.com. The deal, contingent on Veras, 33, passing a physical, is said to include incentives and an option for 2015 at $5.5  million.

The Cubs had no immediate comment on the report.

Veras has pitched for seven teams in an eight-year career. He had 19 saves with the Astros before being traded July 29 to Detroit, where he had two saves for the Tigers and pitched in the postseason — though he gave up a grand slam to the Boston Red Sox’ Shane Victorino in the deciding game of the American League Championship Series.

Veras became a free agent after the Tigers declined to pick up a $3.25 million option after the season.

The Cubs acquired Strop, 28, on July 2 from the Baltimore Orioles along with pitcher Jake Arrieta in exchange for catcher Steve Clevenger and pitcher Scott Feldman.

Strop went 2-2 with a 2.83 ERA for the Cubs in 37 appearances, recording one save and 42 strikeouts in 35 innings.
