NEW YORK — Baseball commissioner Bud Selig says he expects to visit Chicago in May to get an update on Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts’ plan to renovate Wrigley Field.
As a longtime admirer of the Cubs, Selig is particularly eager to see how Ricketts plans to install a giant video screen at the old ballpark.
“I have to see the final plans,” Selig said during a meeting Thursday with the Associated Press Sports Editors. “They haven’t divulged them yet. I really don’t know what’s going up. I think a lot of people want to see those plans.
“But I really do want to say this about Wrigley Field: I have spent a lot of time there. It’s the first big-league ballpark I was ever in. I hate to tell you this, but it was 69 years ago. And I gave the Rickettses credit. They have really stepped forward; they have spent a lot of their own money. I think preserving Wrigley Field is a necessity. It is one of those great institutions in our sport.”
