Sammy Sosa’s statement: Snubbed players ‘are still winners’

Former Cubs outfielder Sammy Sosa, who received only 12.5 percent of the vote for the Hall of Fame on Wednesday, said he and others snubbed in the vote ‘‘are still winners.’’
Sosa’s comments were released in a statement from the Florida-based medical supply company of which he is a partner.
‘‘Even if we weren’t inducted on our first time, we are still winners, and there is always a next time,’’ the statement said.
The company, Injex 21, is located in Fort Lauderdale and markets needle-free medical injections for a range of conditions and purposes, from diabetes to veterinary applications. Sosa is listed as CEO of the company, which he helped establish in 2012 after becoming familiar with the German-based Injex medical supply firm.
The No. 21 represents his Cubs number, which he chose because it was the number of late Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente.
Sosa gained fame with the Cubs as a home-run hitter, becoming the only player in history with three seasons of at least 60 homers. But his feats were tainted by allegations of steroid use, which he always has denied.
In comments through social media, Sosa, 44, said this week he is now ‘‘a businessman, entrepreneur and family man’’ who will let God ‘‘determine my future in the years to come.’’
