Cubs sign pitcher Shawn Camp to 1-year deal

Pitcher Shawn Camp considered the Cubs the lifesavers who rescued his career last spring after being cut from the Seattle Mariners.
Manager Dale Sveum considered Camp the team’s most valuable player through much of the season for the surprising success he had as a key reliever.
On Monday, Camp and the Cubs agreed it was a relationship that should continue.
Camp, 37, signed a one-year contract estimated at $1.35 million, with incentives that could add an additional $200,000 to the deal.
Camp went 3-6 with two saves and a 3.59 ERA for the Cubs while making a career-high 80 appearances. He tied for the major league in appearances and ranked fifth in the National League with 77 2/3 innings of relief work. Camp was only the ninth pitcher in franchise history to make 80 appearances and the first since lefthander Sean Marshall in 2010.
He struck out 54 and walked 21 in his 77 2/3 innings and had an ERA of 2.45 or lower in May, June and September.
