Aside from a few September call-ups, what you see is what you get when it comes to the Cubs’ roster for the rest of the season.
Three days remain to make trades through the waiver process before
teams lock in their playoff-eligible rosters, but the
Cubs have no trade talks going and aren’t expected to deal.
‘‘The last couple of days [of August], people are always looking to secure their playoff roster,’’ general manager Jed Hoyer said Tuesday. ‘‘So if we all of a sudden had interest in a guy that cleared waivers in the next 72 hours, it wouldn’t be surprising at all.’’
The two Cubs known to have cleared waivers are left fielder Alfonso Soriano ($39 million owed through 2014) and closer Carlos Marmol ($11 million owed through next season).
Soriano has all but eliminated the possibility of a trade already by using his no-trade rights with the one interested team (so far). He nixed a potential trade to the San Francisco Giants.
Notes
Left-hander Travis Wood (4-11), who gave up all three runs he allowed in seven innings Tuesday on a home run by Jeff Bianchi in the second, hit his first homer for the Cubs in the third. It was the third homer of his career.
◆ The Cubs designated left-hander Alex Hinshaw for assignment, barely a week after acquiring him off waivers from the San Diego Padres. On Monday, he gave up a walk, a single and three consecutive homers to the five batters he faced in the ninth inning.
◆ Taking Hinshaw’s spot in the bullpen is right-
hander Blake Parker, whom the Cubs activated from the 60-day disabled list (elbow).
◆ Right-handed reliever Shawn Camp, who leads the majors with 66 appearances, is on pace to tie the franchise record of 84 (reached three times, most recently by Bob Howry in 2006). Camp’s career high in appearances is 75.
◆ The Cubs have lost Wood’s last nine starts,
including four quality starts.
