For the record
A quick-strike, double-single-double sequence by Darwin Barney, Reed Johnson and Starlin Castro began a five-run sixth inning. Geovany Soto capped it with his fourth homer of the spring, second to Alfonso Soriano on the team.
Kerry Wood pitched a 1-2-3 inning against the top of the Diamondbacks’ order, including a strikeout of Willie Bloomquist. It was his final spring appearance and first in which he faced more than one batter since March 18.
The emphasis in camp on baserunning was evident four batters into the game, when Johnson scored from third on a sacrifice fly — to the second baseman. When Aaron Hill backpedaled well onto the grass behind second to make the catch, he was in no position to get enough on the throw home.
With management still undecided on the final bullpen spots, Manny Corpas pitched a 1-2-3 eighth with two strikeouts. The other candidate who pitched Monday, Rule 5 player Lendy Castillo, pitched a scoreless ninth. He gave up two singles but got a double play along the way.
Brewers (15-14) at Cubs (16-16), 2:05 p.m., 720-AM. Travis Wood and Shawn Camp are scheduled to pitch.
