PADRES 12, CUBS 11
For the record
A few hours after being informed he’d made the rotation, Chris Volstad had his first poor outing of the spring. He blew a 4-0 lead when he gave up six runs over the second and third innings. “It was good to get that one out of the way,’’ said Volstad, who’s scheduled for a tuneup Tuesday in minor-league camp before his debut April 9 against the Brewers.
Wood chucks
Kerry Wood, who’s building back up after a layoff, pitched in a game for the first time since March 18. He replaced Volstad with one on and two out in the fifth and got a five-pitch strikeout. Wood is expected to pitch twice more before the Cubs break camp.
Leadoff watch
Dale Sveum continues to call his lineup a work in progress, including the leadoff spot. Darwin Barney made a rare start there and had four hits, including a double to the base of the wall in left-center.
Catching fire
A day after Sveum first suggested catcher Geovany Soto could lose playing time to his backup if he doesn’t hit well, Soto walked and scored in the second, hit an RBI double in the fifth and a two-run double in the sixth.
On deck
Dodgers (12-11) at Cubs (14-15), 3:05 p.m., cubs.com (audio). Ryan Dempster, Rafael Dolis, Lendy Castillo, Frankie de la Cruz, Manny Corpas are scheduled to pitch.
