BREWERS 10, CUBS 2
For the record
Randy Wells made another strong pitch for a spot in the rotation with three scoreless innings. He has five scoreless innings in two starts. Two of the other candidates for the rotation didn’t fare so well as the Cubs fell to 6-5.
Position watch
Left-hander Travis Wood has yet to have a strong showing in two appearances (three if you count a rough intrasquad game). He recorded one out in an ugly six-run fourth inning in which all the runs were charged to him (five earned). He allowed three hits and two walks. “Unacceptable,” he said. “That can’t happen. It’s time to get it going.”
Mather watch
Hot-hitting utility candidate Joe Mather drew a walk in two plate appearances off the bench, taking over for third baseman Ian Stewart. He’s 7-for-16 (.467) with four extra-base hits. He’ll start in center field Thursday against the Rockies.
On deck
Split-squad games: Diamondbacks (3-8) at Cubs, 3:05 p.m., cubs.com (audio). Ryan Dempster, Carlos Marmol, Kerry Wood and James Russell are scheduled to pitch. Cubs at Rockies (5-6) 3:10 p.m. Rodrigo Lopez, Scott Maine, Alberto Cabrera, Marcos Mateo and Blake Parker are scheduled to pitch.
