Position watch
Right-hander Jeff Samardzija threw three innings Monday, allowing two runs and two hits and striking out three. Samardzija is one of the five pitchers competing for two starting spots, and though he stumbled, he settled in after giving up his runs in his first inning. Samardzija will start in his next outing this weekend in Las Vegas.
Midseason form?
Carlos Marmol found himself in a familiar position. The right-hander allowed three runs and two hits in one inning and was credited with a blown save before eventually picking up the win. Marmol’s spring ERA is 23.63.
Alfonso Soriano hit his fourth home run of the spring. He’s batting .571 (8-for-14) with two doubles and six RBI. Kerry Wood threw a scoreless inning and struck out a batter.
The kid
Prospect Brett Jackson continued to get a good look from the Cubs’ brass. He started in right field and batted leadoff.
The 2009 first-round pick went 1-for-2 with a walk.
He’s batting .364 in Cactus League action.
On deck
Cubs at Giants, 3:05 p.m., cubs.com. Chris Volstad gets the start. He threw three scoreless innings in his first start Thursday, allowing one hit and striking out three.
