Cubs claim infielder off waivers

The Cubs claimed minor league infielder Adrian Cardenas off waivers from the Oakland Athletics Monday and designated infielder Blake DeWitt for assignment.
DeWitt, 26, appeared in 121 games last season, hitting .265 with 11 doubles. He was acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers in July, 2010 in the deal that sent pitcher Ted Lilly and Ryan Theriot to the Dodgers.
Cardenas, 24, played at Class AAA Sacramento last season, hitting .314 with 28 doubles, four triples, five home runs and 51 RBI in 127 games. He ranked eighth in the Pacific Coast League in hits with 154. He has been primarily a second baseman, originally selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the supplemental round of the 2006 draft.
