Staff writer Neil Hayes sat down with Notre Dame graduate and undefeated light heavyweight boxer Mike Lee, who will headline the first ever professional boxing card at Notre Dame on Friday night at Purcell Pavilion at the Joyce Center.
Sun-Times: Growing up in Wheaton, what were your favorite sports teams?
Mike Lee: Bears, Sox, Bulls, Hawks. I’m a big-time Sox fan.
ST: If you could stage a fight anywhere in Chicago where would it be?
ML: Wrigley Field. My dream is to one-day fight for a title, put a big ring in Wrigley Field and pack the place.
ST:I thought you said you were a Sox fan?
ML:Even though I’m a Sox fan, the whole atmosphere and energy of Wrigley Field would be out of this world. You saw how they did the [NHL’s] Winter Classic. This would be the same kind of thing.
ST: You’re a young, single guy. Are you sure this isn’t about more than atmosphere?
ML: The girls are a lot better at Wrigley Field, that’s for sure.
ST: Could you take fellow-Notre Dame graduate, current Baltimore Ravens safety and pro boxer Tom Zbikowski?
ML: People ask me that all the time. I’ve never even spared with Zibby. He’s an explosive fighter, actually.
ST: You earned a degree in finance from Notre Dame’s Mendoza School of Business. What do your friends think of your boxing career?
ML: Most of them are in finance. I’m hoping they do well so they can take care of my money.
