At the plate: Infield bench candidate Bobby Scales is raking in limited duty. He had three more hits, including a go-ahead, two-run single to center in the fifth inning, in the Cubs’ 7-6 loss Saturday in Mesa. Starlin Castro hit two two-run home runs in the Cubs’ 9-8 loss in Las Vegas. Scott Moore, tied with Castro for the team’s spring home-run lead with three, added two solo shots among four hits in Vegas, and Tyler Colvin jump-started a .192 spring with a four-hit performance. He boosted his average to .290.
On the mound: Carlos Silva was better but not great in his third start — pitching 1-2-3 innings three times but giving up a homer and two runs in each of his other two innings. Carlos Marmol gave up a two-out RBI double in a Vegas inning that included a hit batter and two walks.
