At the plate: The Cubs (1-2) won their first game, thanks to a three-run sixth inning. Marlon Byrd singled to drive in one run, and Aramis Ramirez followed with a two-run double inside the bag at third. Starlin Castro beat out an infield single in the fourth during a two-hit game.
On the mound: Opening Day starter Ryan Dempster was efficient enough through two innings — despite allowing a run in the second — that he added an unscheduled third inning to his day. Todd Wellemeyer looked sharp in his two innings.
